Military Ancestors Workshop

Did any of your family members serve? This two hour workshop is perfect if you are just beginning your research into a military ancestor, starting a project to research your village’s war memorial, or you’re just interested in how to find out more about your area’s wartime history as we approach the centenary commemorations of the First World War. While this workshop is part of the ‘Norfolk in World War Two’ series, the practical workshop will focus on earlier, often First World War records which are more accessible. Come access:

– first world war officer and soldier medal, service and pension records

– places to find out more about those that did not return

– war diaries

– places to find out more about researching other services e.g. RFC and Merchant Navy

– how to request an ancestor’s Second World War service record

– where to look for information about pre-1913 soldiers

The workshop is split into two sections – a ‘how to’ with time for questions and then a ‘hands on’ section giving you examples of records and questions to answer, so that you can get some practice using online and offline sources. The session will be led by Elizabeth Budd from Norfolk Record Office but will be held in the Vernon Castle Room on the Second Floor of the Norfolk and Norwich Millennium Library for the first half of the session, and then in the searchroom at the Norfolk Heritage Centre for the second part of the session. Please bring a £1 coin with you for the lockers as you will need to put your bags and coats away (this will be returned). When: 9th of April, 2-4pm *Booking Required

Looking for a fun day out with the whole family? Join us for our Family Open Day where will be hosting a day of heritage activities for the young ones and offering tours of both the Norfolk Heritage Center and 2nd Air Division Memorial Library. When: Sunday 13th of April, 11am-3:45pm

With such a wide range of events there is surely something for everyone to enjoy. All events are free and open to all but spaces are limited for those which require booking so please be sure to book ahead. To reserve your seat or for any questions, please contact us:
